Bank barns were named for their construction technique - the barn is built into the side of a hill, allowing both levels to be entered from the ground. The lower level housed animals and the upper level served as threshing floor and storage; wagons filled with grain had an easy entrance to the upper level. A "bank" could be created by building up an earthen ramp to the second level, as is the case at Ohio Barn Bed and Breakfast.

The Miller family of Clark County, Ohio owned the farm as of 1859 according to an 1859 Clark County map; the house and barn were built in 1895. Karen Hamilton, a designer, and Al Roberts, an engineer, purchased the property in 1986.
